Ayago Dolkema, communty borehole
Ayago Dolkema is a community in Northern Uganda, located in the Acholi Sub-region, Bwobo-Tochi Subcounty. The community is home to more than 100 families who previously faced challenges accessing safe and clean drinking water. In 2025, a borehole fitted with a manual hand pump was successfully drilled to provide a reliable source of clean drinking water. The project has improved access to safe water and is helping to improve the health and well-being of families in the community.
Why a scheme and not a pump
A health centre needs water at the point of use, not two hundred metres away, and the trading centre around it had outgrown what one hand pump can deliver in a day. A single pump would have produced a queue rather than a service.
What was built
Sixteen panels drive a submersible pump into a six-metre tower carrying a 10,000-litre tank. Distribution from the tank is gravity-fed to four tap stands, so nothing downstream of the tank depends on the sun or on a moving part.
Running it
The committee collects a small tariff per jerrycan. Over the first year that has covered the maintenance contract without further subsidy, which is the test that matters — a scheme that needs an annual grant to stay running has not been handed over, it has been lent.
